There are several different types of visas. The reason for your travel to the United States and the length of your stay will determine the type of visa for which you are eligible to apply. Additionally, each visa is valid for only specific periods and may or may not be renewable. It is best to consult with our attorneys to determine which temporary visa is appropriate for your situation and what the restrictions and requirements are.
- B1 visas are for visitors traveling for business. You must prove a business connection or reason for your limited visit.
- B2 visas are for visitors traveling for pleasure. You must be able to show financial ability and intention to return to your home country.
- O1 visas are for nonimmigrants with extraordinary abilities in sciences, arts, education, business, or athletics or achievement in motion picture and/or television productions with sponsoring employers or agents.
- H1B visas are employment based visas issued once per year on October 1 and are limited by quota. These are issued to those with education, experience and employer sponsorship.
- L1 visas are intended for managerial or executive intercompany transferees from a foreign country to the United States.
- J1 visas allow a person to come to the United States to obtain vocational training. It is subject to a two-year rule indicating that you will return to your sponsoring country for at least two years so it benefits from your training. Marrying a US citizen does not waive the two-year rule.
- TN visas apply to the NAFTA countries. For those whose occupations are listed on a stated schedule, many H1 requirements are waived. Though it is good for only a year, renewal is achieved simply by presenting appropriate documentation at the national border or at a USCIS Service Center within the US.
